The historic town

The municipality of Vyškov is located 25 kilometers (~15.53 miles) from Brno in the South Moravian region of the Czech Republic. The Haná River flows through the town and it is bordered by the Drahany Highlands. The first written mention of the municipality dates back to 1141, when it was located at the crossroads of the Olomouc-Kroměříž trade routes. It was founded as a town in the 13th century. At that time, it became the property of the Olomouc bishops and remained in their possession for 600 years. The town flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries. Crafts began to develop significantly. As a result of the wars, the town was severely damaged. Two-thirds of the buildings and inhabitants died.

Old baroque estate

The Vyškov Chateau and castle garden were originally built in the Gothic style. In the 17th century, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style by Karl II von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn based on the designs of Giovanni Pietro Tencalla. At that time, both the castle and the castle garden were expanded. Vyškov Castle is the oldest building in the city. Today, the Regional Museum (Muzeum Vyškovska) welcomes visitors here with its archaeological, historical, ethnographic and fine art collections. Its extensive collection of folk ceramics was produced here in the city from the beginning of the 18th century. During its long history, the castle has been visited by many important people, including Napoleon himself, who stayed here several times.
