One of the popular hangout spots
Throughout Brno, there are plenty of small summer hangout spots with beach chairs laid out. There is one at the Vegetable Market too. In summer, refreshments and ice cream are sold in front of the fountain. When I meet with bestie we spend hours sitting here on beach chairs drinking lemonade. However, it is also important to mention the historical values of this area.
The centuries-old Zelný trh
The Zelný trh, or Vegetable Market, was established in the 13th century. At that time it was still called Horní trh, it only got its current name in the 15th century. Here you can buy vegetables, fruit, honey, spices, seedlings, flowers and other different agricultural products. In the Middle Ages, food and wine were stored in underground cellars 8 meters (26ft) below the market square, in the labyrinth. However, it also served as a shelter during the war. Today they run tours to show you the labyrinth with the archaeological finds. We can also see an old alchemist’s laboratory, presenting the Brno doctors, pharmacists and physicists of that time, and many other interesting things. The market still operates on the square to this day, but the area below the market is now only used as an exhibition for the public.
The sights of the square
At the center of the square is a baroque fountain, the Parnas Fountain (Kašna Parnas). There are many old buildings in the square. The Dietrichsteinský Palace, designed by the Italian architect Tencalla, is home to the Moravské Zemské Museum. The Reduta Theatre, which is one of the oldest theater buildings in Central Europe. Two baroque palaces and the baroque Three Trinity sculpture group standing in front of them. Also here is a renaissance block, the Malý Špalíček.
“Life is about growth and exploration, not achieving a fixed state of balance. You have a very limited time on earth to experience all that you can. Figuring out how to squeeze the most out of your family, work, and spirituality is your life’s purpose. Go do it.”
